Kristian Elster the Younger (born March 17, 1881 in Trondheim , † November 6, 1947 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian writer , literary critic and literary historian .

Life

Elster was the son of the writer Kristian Mandrup Elster , who died a few weeks after his birth. His mother, Sanna Fasting , first moved with her three sons to their home town of Førde and later to Kristiania ( Oslo ).

After his Abitur, which he passed in 1900, Elster studied law and then worked from 1906 as a judicial officer, first in Mandal and then in the Ministry of Agriculture.

After he had published a short story in 1905, his first book followed in 1907, a collection of short stories. However, he had his breakthrough in the 1910s with novels, namely with the autobiographical trilogy I lære , Landeveien and Mester , published from 1911 to 1913 , and with Minbror Harris , published in 1917 .

From 1911 Elster also worked as a literary critic for the newspaper Intelligenssedler , initially parallel to his civil service. In 1918 he resigned from civil service to devote himself exclusively to literature. From 1919 he also wrote reviews for the newspapers Aftenposten and Nations .

In 1922 he began work on a presentation of Norwegian literary history, which should compete with the work of Francis Bull and Johan Fredrik Paasche . Elster's work was published in 1923 and 1924 as Illustreret norsk litteraturhistorie and was reprinted in 1934 and 1935.

In addition to numerous novels, Elster also published short stories, plays, children's books and the volume of poetry Fjeldets fange . In his work he dealt - similar to Nini Roll Anker - with the development of the civil service in a time marked by political changes. In his novels he often dealt with the contrast between dreamy aestheticism and active social activity.
