Kristian Mandrup Elster (born March 4, 1841 in Overhalla , † April 11, 1881 in Trondheim ) was a Norwegian writer and literary critic .

Life

Elster was the son of the official Christen Christensen Elster and the grandson of Christen Elster . He grew up in Overhalla in North Trøndelag . In 1853 the family moved to Førde . From the age of fifteen Elster attended a school in Kristiania . Actually, he should embark on an officer career. However, his nearsightedness prevented that.

Instead, he studied literature and wrote plays. As early as 1860, one of his plays, Fra Fjorden , was accepted by Henrik Ibsen , the then artistic director of the Kristiania Norske Theater . However, Elster himself was no longer satisfied with his piece and withdrew it. His piece Eystein Meyla was performed three years later, but was not very successful.

Elster neglected his school duties and especially the Latin lessons caused him great difficulties. He did not pass the Abitur until 1864. He then worked as a journalist before training as a forester in Gießen from 1867 to 1868 . After working for a few years in Kristiania as a theater critic, including for the newspaper Aftenbladet , he finally got a job as a forest clerk in Sør-Trøndelag in 1873 . In addition to his work as a forester, he continued to work as a literary critic, meanwhile for Trondheim newspapers such as Dagsposten .

His own literary works were influenced by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Iwan Sergejewitsch Turgenew . He was considered an important pioneer of realism in Norway. Towards the end of the 1870s, socialist and anarchist ideas found a place in Elster's work under the influence of the labor movement .

Elster had been married to Sanna Fasting since 1874 . The marriage produced three sons. The youngest son was Kristian Elster the Younger , who later also became famous as a writer. A few weeks after the birth of his third son, Elster died of pneumonia .

His last novel, Farlige Folk , was only published posthumously . It received a lot of attention in Scandinavia and, like some other works by Elster, was translated into German.
