Kristian Lauritsen

Kristian Martinus Lauritsen (born June 18, 1924 in Ravnholt, Bording Sogn , Ikast-Brande Kommune ; † March 5, 2015 ) was a Danish provost in Greenland and pastor .

Life

Kristian Lauritsen was the son of the court owner Peter Lauritsen (1899–1968) and his wife Petrea Christensen (1900–1976). When he was four years old, the family moved to Stubkær, six kilometers north. He grew up in a modest peasant family and had to work on the farm, even if his intelligence was noticed at a young age. He saved money and was able to enroll at the university in 1948. In 1954 he graduated from the University of Copenhagen with a degree in theology . Together with his wife Jytte Nyborg Bech, whom he had just married, he moved to Denmark, where he worked as an ordained helper in Qeqertarsuatsiaat to improve his Greenlandic. In 1956 he was appointed pastor of Sisimiut . In 1963 he returned to Denmark, where he was appointed pastor in Gerlev Sogn and Dråby Sogn . In 1968 he became provost of Greenland. Five years later he left Greenland again and became a pastor in Frederiksborg Slotssogn . He officially retired in 1995, but worked as a Greenlandic pastor in Denmark until 2000.

Kristian Lauritsen was the last Dane to hold a high ecclesiastical office in Greenland. In addition to his church work, he was a lecturer at the Greenland Seminary in Denmark from 1973 to 1980, before it was closed, and at the same time also Greenland advisor to the Kirkeministeriet . During his time in Greenland he was deputy director of Knud Rasmussenip Højskolia and from 1963 to 1966 he was vice chairman of Den Grønlandske Kirkesag . From 1968 to 1973 he was a member of the Greenland School Board.

Kristian Lauritsen received the Nersornaat in silver on June 27, 2000 . In 2007 he published the book Min grønlandskrønike , which tells of his experiences in Greenland. He couldn't finish two more books. He died in Denmark in 2015 at the age of 90.
