The initiative to found the park came from Willy Tjomsaas. From 1965 Edvard Moseid was responsible for the expansion and development of the zoo, which opened on June 26, 1966. Edvard Moseid worked in the park until 2000.

From 1983 the park was expanded into a combined animal and leisure park. The artist and author Terje Formoe worked from 1984 to 1994 as a marketing and entertainment manager at the zoo and built up a musical program for children and families, the main character of which, Kaptein Sabeltann , first shown in 1989, quickly gained popularity. Every year since 1989, performances related to the pirate's adventures have been shown in an amphitheater , and an entire section of the park is devoted to the events surrounding Captain Saber Tooth. In 1991 another section of the park, the Kardemomme by by Thorbjørn Egner , was opened.

On May 25, 2007 the zoo received two female and two male lions from a Danish zoo; both females gave birth to offspring in 2008.

The largest single investment was made with 115 million Norwegian kroner for the Badelandet , a bathing area, which opened on June 25, 2010 .
