Kristin Berardi

Kristin Berardi (* 1981 in Koumala , Queensland ) is an Australian jazz musician ( vocals , composition ) who is "at the top of the jazz scene in her Australian homeland."

Live and act

Berardi first learned to play the violin , then switched to the alto saxophone . She completed school in Mackay and first completed classical instrumental studies at the Queensland Conservatory and Griffith University . After recognizing her talent as a vocalist, she continued her studies there with a Bachelor of Music Majoring in jazz singing . The instrumental training helped her significantly in developing her compositions and arrangements. She has a “wonderful, very unpretentious and yet extremely engaging voice.” In 2008 she presented her debut album with her original compositions, which was followed by other albums. In 2011 she released an album with the Australian Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra . With guitarist James Sherlook, she has self-published two duo albums since 2012.

At the Melbourne Women's International Jazz Festival , Berardi introduced herself with her quartet, but also as the composer of a ten-person improvisation ensemble. She recorded in New York with Kenny Werner and Jim Pugh , in Australia with Con Artists , Tony Gould, the West End Composers Collective , Kate Miller-Heidke , Leo McFadden and Phat Professor Funk . In Germany she could be heard with Florian Ross and his quintet ( Swallows & Swans 2018). In 2020 she sang the song Strangers in the Night as the background to a television commercial for Audi automobiles.

Berardi was visiting professor of jazz studies at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Mackay and professor of jazz singing at the Australian National University in Canberra.

Berardi lives in Brisbane.

Prizes and awards

Berardi won the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival International Singing Competition . In 2007 she was awarded the Freeman Fellowship of the Music Council of Australia (so far as the only jazz musician) . In 2012 she won the National Jazz Award for Vocalists. In 2010, 2013 and 2016 she received the National Bell Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in Australia.
