Krommenie is a village in the municipality of Zaanstad , North Holland province ( Netherlands ). The village has a rail connection via the Krommenie-Assendelft station .

Surname

The name Krommenie was first used at the end of the 13th century. The name is derived from Crommenye, a body of water between the Wijkermeer and the Langmeer .

history

Krommenie was an important center of canvas weaving in the Netherlands during the Golden Age . The quality of Krommenie's Dutch sailcloth was internationally known.

In 1974 Krommenie lost the status of an independent municipality and became part of the municipality of Zaanstad.

The village celebrated its 750th anniversary in 2001.

Attractions

At Krommenie is the Fort bij Krommeniedijk , a historical defensive position from the defense ring around Amsterdam . This defense ring of Amsterdam was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996 .

In and near Krommenie there are 25 national monuments ( Rijksmonumenten ).

In the fall of 2014, a 70-meter-long cycle path made of photovoltaic modules was built (SolaRoad). The cycle path is to be expanded to 100 meters by 2016 and then produce enough energy to supply up to three households. According to the operator, the balance of energy generation in 2015 was very positive.
