The Krone is a 300-year-old listed building on Kronenplatz in Dietikon in the canton of Zurich .

history

The first building was first mentioned in 1259 as a tavern and was the property of the Wettingen monastery . Only one tavern was allowed to offer food in addition to a drink, to accommodate guests and to run the typical flagship inn. As one of the few accommodations between Baden and Zurich , it was well frequented at the time of cart and stagecoach traffic and an important source of income for the monastery. The second building was built in 1595. It had 25 beds and consisted of an inn, barn, storage room, herb garden and tree garden with pigsties. The foundation stone for the third and current building was laid in 1703. In 1841 the Wettingen monastery was abolished and its property passed to the canton of Aargau . In 1843 a private citizen bought the inn. Two years later a bakery was set up and in 1954 extensive exterior and interior renovations were carried out. Larger fragments of painted ceiling boards were removed and allegedly stored in the Swiss National Museum .

On November 3, 1982, the building department of the Canton of Zurich placed the "Krone" under monument protection . The building could not be demolished. Changes to the exterior were subject to the approval of the municipal building authority and had to be approved by the building management.

In the protection order, the tavern assembly was described as extremely important. The former stables and the barn of the tavern were part of the property, enhancing its appearance and setting a distinctive accent. The importance of the ensemble lies primarily in the historical. The building is a structural testimony to the close relationships between the influential Wettingen Monastery and the Limmat Valley . The “crown” also stands out as a powerful witness of the early baroque, rural representative building. The well-proportioned building shows two baroque portals, richly designed for rural conditions, with the coats of arms of Abbots Reuty and Baumgartner and the monastery. In no other Limmattal municipality is there a similar, historically so significant solid building from the 18th century.

With the acquisition of the crown property by the city of Dietikon in 2005, the community had the opportunity to acquire a historical cultural asset and to preserve and develop it not only in its substance, but also in its intended use.

The interior of the Krone was redesigned by the Zurich architects Tilla Theus und Partner AG. The official start of construction was on May 26, 2008. The restaurant operations were limited to the ground floor and basement with a restaurant, café-bar, lounge and vaulted cellar. The upper floors were converted and equipped so that representative office space can be rented. In one of the offices there is a listed room with belt floors made of oak, fresco lime paints and wooden beam ceilings with restored paintings. On April 10, 2010 the city celebrated 'Open House' and on April 19, 2010 the gates of the tavern zur Krone opened again.
