economy

In Kropfmühl, graphite ( Hauzenberger graphite ) has been mined with one interruption since 1870 . In 2005 funding was discontinued. However, the mine was preserved in such a way that, according to the operator, graphite production could be resumed within six months if the world market price rises to such an extent that operation is economical again.

In the summer of 2012, graphite mining was resumed after seven years. In 2008 Advanced Metallurgical Group NV (Amsterdam) took over the majority of what was then Graphit Kropfmühl AG , and in 2012 the company was completely taken over.

The graphite mine is also open to visitors. The company produces silicon and graphite . Silicon is used in the chemical, aluminum, semiconductor and solar cell industries. Graphites are used in lubricants , as carbon brushes in electric motors and in the chemical industry, for example for thermal insulation and energy-saving programs.
