Macroscopic view of a Krukenberg tumor

The Krukenberg tumor ( Fibrosarcoma ovarii mucocellulare carcinomatodes ) was named after Friedrich Ernst Krukenberg (1871-1946), who first described it. This tumor represents a special form of ovarian metastases . 10 to 15% of malignancies of the ovary are metastases . The Krukenberg tumor is an often bilateral, cavitary metastasis (drained metastasis in the peritoneal space ) of a signet ring cell carcinoma of the gastric mucosa. Histologically, there is a typical picture with mucus-forming signet ring cells. The ovarian stroma proliferates profusely and the cells multiply.

In individual cases, hyperestrogenism or virilization can follow.
