Krystyna Drohojowska
Krystyna (Krzysia) Drohojowska (later Ketling von Elgin) is a fictional character from the historical epic Pan Wołodyjowski by Henryk Sienkiewicz . She is a pretty orphan who marries the Scot, Hassling-Ketling of Elgin .
In Jerzy Hoffman's 1969 film adaptation , Barbara is played by Barbara Brylska .
biography
Krystyna is an orphan and is in the care of Stolnik Makowiecki. In 1668 she came to Warsaw with Barbara Jeziorkowska and met Michał Wołodyjowski there . She falls in love and becomes engaged to him. She accepts his proposal of marriage, although her feelings for him are purely platonic. But soon she also meets Hassling-Ketling of Elgin , Wołodyjowski's friend. Krystyna and Ketling fall in love quickly, but since she is already engaged, both cannot be together. She therefore decides to go to the monastery, but Wołodyjowski releases Krystyna to his friend after learning of their love for each other because he wants them both to be happy.
After they get married, Krystyna and Ketling live in Courland and have a son. In 1672 Ketling went to Kamieniec Podolski , which was occupied by the Ottomans . Krystyna accompanies him there. After the city surrenders, Ketling refuses to surrender and blows himself up with his friend Michał Wołodyjowski.
Character description
Krystyna is a young and very pretty girl. She is tall and slim, has black hair, large blue eyes, and light skin tone. She is a shy and passive, but honorable person. When she noticed her feelings for Ketling, she feels guilty. She prefers to become a nun rather than marry the unloved Wołodyjowski. At the end of the novel, she shows herself very brave when she decides not to leave Ketling, even during the battle against the Ottomans .
