from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ketling (Hassling-Ketling of Elgin ) is a fictional character from the historical epic Pan Wołodyjowski by Henryk Sienkiewicz . The Scot Ketling came to Poland-Lithuania when he was colonel in the Polish-Lithuanian artillery in the service of the Polish King John II Casimir . Ketling married Krystyna Drohojowska , the former sister-in-law of his friend Michał Wołodyjowski .

Ketling died in the siege of Kamieniec Podolski when he and his friend Michał Wołodyjowski blew himself up so as not to accept the Ottoman victory over the city and feel like a traitor to the Roman Catholic Church .

The historical person on whom the character is partially based was Major Heyking , a mercenary from Courland and the commander of the Polish fortress Kamieniec Podolski during the Ottoman-Polish War 1672–76 .

In Jerzy Hoffman's 1969 film adaptation , Ketling is played by Jan Nowicki .
