Heddy Maria Wettstein (born September 4, 1911 in Wädenswil , † September 30, 2006 in Küsnacht ) was a Swiss actress . She founded the theater named after her in 1964 in the Villa Tobler on Winkelwiese in Zurich.

Life

Heddy Maria Wettstein originally trained in gymnastics, rhythm and artistic dance. At the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna she trained as an actress. The founding of her own small theater “Theater Heddy Maria Wettstein” on the Winkelwiese in Zurich is considered a pioneering achievement by a woman in the German-speaking theater scene.

She earned her reputation as doyenne of the Zurich theater scene primarily by promoting young talented actors and young Swiss playwrights. In the 1960s and 1970s, Wettstein regularly performed world premieres of plays by Swiss authors, including Walter Matthias Diggelmann , Jürg Amann , Walter Vogt and Silja Walter .

The main focus of her work was the genre of literary chamber play. In her small theater with 40 seats she showed her own productions, mainly spoken theater without a permanent ensemble. Until a very old age, she could also be seen on stage on guest tours.
