Kueser Academy for European Intellectual History

The Kueser Akademie für Europäische Geistesgeschichte eV is a scientific association based in Bernkastel-Kues . It was founded in October 2009 as a non-university research and educational institution . At the same time, it is the seat of the "Joint Scientific Facility of the Universities of Mainz, Oldenburg and Trier".

The Kueser Akademie für Europäische Geistesgeschichte eV is a non-profit association . It was opened on May 7, 2010 immediately before the 2nd Kueser Talks in the Machern Monastery (Bernkastel-Kues) in the presence of numerous guests of honor. At the same time, the joint research center of the universities of Mainz, Oldenburg and Trier at the Kues Academy was launched in the presence of representatives from these universities. The academy started operations with the first seminars and its first own third-party funded research project. From 2015 to 2019 the Kueser Academy was an affiliate of the Cusanus University .

In line with the thinking of Nikolaus von Kues (Cusanus), the Kueser Academy wants to research, teach, educational and cultural work as well as social activity to research, pass on and make fruitful of Europe's cultural and spiritual heritage.

With the help of the reference to the European intellectual history, she would like to recognize issues of overriding relevance for culture, science, art, economy, politics and society and develop ideas for possible perspectives for action.

The Kueser Academy works in three areas:

  1. It is an independent scientific institution for research and teaching, which works in an international network and pursues an interdisciplinary and intellectual history approach.
  2. It is the center of a network between science, culture, economy and society, which also influences the practical interdependence of these four areas.
  3. It is an institution for cultural further education: the Kueser Academy promotes education in the region for the region in cooperation with various regional institutions.

The board of directors of the association consists of Alexander Licht , Henrieke Stahl, Harald Schwaetzer and, as natural members, the association and city mayors of Bernkastel-Kues. The activities of the Academy's academic members are coordinated by an initiative group. Matthias Vollet is the managing director of the academy.

The academy includes numerous scientific and non-scientific members from Germany, Belgium, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain, Japan, Argentina, Colombia and the USA. The academy organizes international and national conferences, lecture series, working groups and seminars and cooperates with scientific, cultural and advanced training institutions. A partnership with commercial enterprises is being established. Topic-specific networks are also located at the academy. The academy also offers visiting scholars the opportunity to work.

Research center at the Kues Academy

The "Joint Scientific Facility of the Universities of Mainz, Oldenburg and Trier and the Alanus University Alfter at the Kueser Academy for European Intellectual History" is located at the Academy. The joint research center guarantees the participating universities and the Kueser Academy flexible cooperation as well as a basis for developing joint research projects and new forms of teaching. The cooperation agreement as a framework agreement enables projects to be designed in various ways, whereby each of the universities involved can sharpen its own profile. Since 2015, the Kues Academy has also been an institute at the Cusanus University (a state-recognized independent university) in Bernkastel-Kues .

Publication organs

The academy publishes two series of its own ("Philosophy interdisciplinary" by Roderer Verlag , Regensburg; "Texts and Studies on European Intellectual History" by Aschendorff Verlag, Münster) and its own magazine, "Coincidentia. Journal for European Intellectual History ”(Aschendorff Verlag, Münster).

Projects

National and international research projects involving several universities are currently located at the academy:

  • a project financed by the Sparkasse Mittelmosel to create a biography of Cusanus based on the "Acta Cusana" (critical source edition in Latin on the life of Cusanus) (completed)
  • a Franco-German project on Nikolaus von Kues, Meister Eckhart and Rhenish mysticism (including with the University of Metz) (completed)
  • a project for the edition of a Russian translation of the writings of Cusanus (University of Trier and Losev House Moscow)
  • a project on the life and work of Heinrich Barth
  • a project about the life and work of Gideon Spicker
  • several educational research projects, financed by the BMBF (completed)

The international network of young researchers on the philosophy of Henri Bergson is also located at the Kueser Akademie .

Teaching

In teaching, the Kueser Academy carried out the certificates "Philosophy - Concepts of Spirituality" and "Economic and Social Design" from 2014 to autumn 2015. Thanks to the successful state recognition of the Cusanus University, these certificates were included in the university’s master’s program in autumn 2015.

The Kueser Akademie also sees it as an essential task to familiarize interested parties with no academic background with European intellectual history. This educational work is aimed primarily at the residents of the Middle Moselle region as well as guests. It takes place in lecture series (“Auf ein Wort”, “European intellectual history”, Cusanus lecture series in the spa guest center), thematic seminars and seminar series (e.g. on the subject of mysticism) and also in advanced training courses.

The Kueser Academy also organizes cultural events (e.g. exhibitions, concerts, literary hikes) in order to strengthen the profile of the Middle Moselle cultural landscape.
