The Kugelbrunnen is a fountain created by Albert Sous in Aachen in 1977 .

The metal sculptor Sous from Würselen used stainless steel from the drums of washing machines . The sculpture was presented to the public in October 1977. At that time it cost 290,000 DM.

The fountain consists of a six-meter-high iron pipe and three nested spheres. Within eight minutes, the two, four and eight open segments existing balls hydraulically and unfold into a flower. At the top of the ball, water flows into a basin, which is laid out in a spiral with many small ceramic balls . The spheres come from the Jülich Research Center , where they were used to mechanically test the AVR high-temperature reactor . They never came into contact with radioactivity, they were only the required diameter and weight. Sous found tens of thousands of these spheres in an earth dump in the vicinity of the AVR premises and also used them for other works, including pieces directed against Jülich nuclear research. The balls are supposed to remind of the casino that was opened a year earlier.

The ensemble includes the smaller part of the fountain, which is also covered with small balls and serves as a drinking water dispenser.
