Kulturarena Jena, Theaterplatz

The KulturArena has been a six-week international open-air festival in the center of Jena since 1992 with a focus on music , theater and film . It takes place in July and August. One intention of the festival is to offer non-commercially oriented artists a forum as well as to create a cultural meeting point in the inner city of Jena.

The initially small festival is one of East Germany's largest open-air events with around 70,000 visitors annually.

prehistory

In 1987 the auditorium of the old city theater, designed by Walter Gropius , was demolished. A pompous "Friedrich Schiller Theater" was to be created. This was never realized. In 1991, on the initiative of the first head of the cultural department, Klaus Hattenbach († 2010), a theater team began to work in the ruins again. This was the nucleus of the Jena Theater , which still exists today .

In 1991, Hattenbach, together with the new head of the cultural office, Norbert Reif († 2000) and other heads of cultural affairs, developed the idea of an urban, international music festival .

The Kulturarena is the smaller parallel event to the " Kulturzelt " which has been taking place in Kassel since 1987 . The Kassel music manager Lutz Engelhardt has been involved as artistic director from the start.
