The seven Kungshögarna of Hovgården are archaeological sites on the island of Adelsö in Mälaren in Uppland in Sweden . Together with the remains of the Viking trading town Birka on the island of Björkö to the south, Hovgården was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993 .
The Viking royal seat that ruled Birka was in Hovgården. Here are seven Kungshögarna ( German "King Hill" ) called grave hill that one with Sveakönigen (also called Birkakungar) connects, who ruled from 865 to 970 n. Chr..
Kungshögarna
- Kungshög 1 (RAÄ number Adelsö 48: 1) is about one meter high and about 14.0 m in diameter
- Kungshög 2 (RAÄ number Adelsö 48: 2) is about 2.5 meters high and about 21.0 m in diameter
- Kungshög 3 (RAÄ number Adelsö 48: 3) is about 0.75 meters high and about 10.0 m in diameter
- Kungshög 4 (RAÄ number Adelsö 48: 4) is 5.0 to 6.0 meters high and about 45.0 m in diameter
- Kungshög 5 (RAÄ number Adelsö 48: 5) is about 3.5 meters high and about 20.0 m in diameter
- Kungshög 6 (RAÄ number Adelsö 48: 6) is about 3.5 meters high and about 25.0 m in diameter
- Kungshög 7 (RAÄ number Adelsö 48: 7 - also called Tingshögen) is about 1.3 meters high and about 25.0 m in diameter
Castles ( Swedish fornborgar ), the rune stone Hovgårdsstenen (also Håkanstenen ) and the remains of a hall that were probably already in use by the brothers Björn på Håga and Anund Uppsale, kings of Uppland, in the early 9th century were also found near Hovgården . Björn and Anund are known as the kings who were visited by Ansgar around 830 AD. It is mentioned in the hagiography about the life of Saint Ansgar ( Vita sancti Ansgari ), written by Archbishop Rimbert of Hamburg-Bremen. It also tells of battles between the Vikings and the Kurds in 855. Hovgården also has a stone church, Adelsö Church, which was built around 1100 and later rebuilt.
