Kuo-Tsai Chen ( Chinese 陳 國 才 ; * 1923 in Zhejiang ; † 1987 ) was a Chinese-American mathematician.

Life

Chen received his doctorate in 1950 from Columbia University with Samuel Eilenberg ( integration in free groups ). He was a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign .

In 1960/61, 1962, 1971 and 1979 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study .

Chen initially dealt with group theory in the topology of three-dimensional spheres and then with formal differential equations . He is best known for his theory of iterated integrals and power series in connection with the cohomology of loop spaces. His aim was to investigate the connections between topology and analysis via path integrals .
