Philippe Maurice Tondeur (born December 7, 1932 in Zurich ) is a Swiss - American mathematician who deals with differential geometry and topology .

Life

Tondeur received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Zurich in 1961 . As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Paris until 1963 , lecturer at the University of Zurich in 1963/64 and at Harvard University in 1964/65 . In 1965 he became a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley and in 1966 an associate professor at Wesleyan University . Since 1968 he has been Associate Professor and since 1970 Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , whose Mathematics Faculty he headed from 1996 until his retirement in 2002. In 1977/78 and 1991/92 he was also a member of the Center for Advanced Study there.

After his retirement he was director of mathematics at the National Science Foundation . He was the editor of the Illinois Journal of Mathematics.

Tondeur was visiting professor and visiting scholar in Buenos Aires, Auckland in New Zealand, Heidelberg, Rome, Santiago de Compostela, Leuven, at the ETH Zurich , the École polytechnique , at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, the University of Tohoku, the University of Hokkaido and Keio University in Tokyo.

He is particularly concerned with the geometry of leaves and the geometric theory of partial differential equations.

In 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
