The copper tetra or silvertip tetra ( Hasemania nana , syn .: Tetragonopterus nanus , Hemigrammus nanus , Hasemania marginata ) is a peaceful schooling fish . In 1937 the now popular freshwater ornamental fish was first introduced to Europe.

distribution

It is native to São Francisco in southeastern Brazil and the headwaters of the Rio Purus . These waters have clear white or black water .

features

The male of the tetra , which is up to 5 cm long , is characterized by its shiny copper color, which gives the fish its name. The rear part of the slender body is traversed by a particularly pronounced black band in the tail area. The dorsal fin , anal fin and the forked caudal fin are bright white at the tips. The rather silvery, shiny female looks squat and is generally more subtle in color.

Aquaristics

The males often show pronounced territorial behavior at spawning time and take on a reddish color that can be clearly distinguished from the female. As an omnivore, the copper tetra does not make any special demands on nutrition, but is still happy about a varied diet.

Keeping and care

Since the copper tetra in nature lives in spring streams, it should have enough free swimming space in addition to protective planting.

In Austria, the minimum requirements for keeping fish are defined in Regulation 486 in Section 7 and its Annex 5. See also the Wikipedia entry ornamental fish .
