Hasemania is a genus of tropical freshwater fish from the family of the true tetras (Characidae). The genus was named after JD Haseman, a student of the German-American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann . The copper tetra ( Hasemania nana ), a popular freshwater ornamental fish,belongs to the genus. Hasemania species occur in eastern South America from the Rio São Francisco to the Río Paraná .

features

Hasemania species grow to be 2.7 to 6.7 inches long. Its body is moderately elongated, the dorsal fin is short, the anal fin is long. There is no adipose fin . The caudal fin is bilobed. In contrast to the closely related genus Hemigrammus , the base of the caudal fin in Hasemania is unscaled .

External system

Hasemania is not currently assigned to any subfamily. The genus belongs with ten other genera to a monophyletic clade within the real tetras , which is called the Hemigrammus clade.
