Copper goat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The copper goat , Latin capra hircus kelleri , is an extinct breed of goat , the oldest archaeological finds of which date from the Copper Age and which was first described as a type by J. Ulrich Dürst (1904, 1905) following on from H. Krämer (1899).

The copper goat was characterized by a large body and screwed horns, their coloration is not known. According to Dürst, locations include Heidelberg , Lake Biel and the Roman camp Vindonissa in Aargau. In the pile dwellings in Switzerland, the copper goat displaced the smaller peat goat ( capra hircus rütimeyeri or palustris ), but the copper goat does not seem to have been widespread in the period between the end of the Neolithic and Roman times.

One suspects a descendant of the copper goat in the Valais black-necked goat . In rare cases, black-necked goats are born with a reddish instead of black fur color in the front part of the body that deviates from the usual appearance and, according to an observation from 1890, are said to have appeared earlier in herds in this particular color. Recently, the Swiss Pro Specie Rara Foundation has called this type the “ copper neck goat ” and suspected a recessive gene to be the cause of the deviating color.
