Although the section between Shinjuku and Tachikawa had already been opened in 1889 by the private railway company Kōbu Tetsudō , the trains ran without stopping for 75 years. This changed after a petition from the residents of Koganei to the Japanese State Railways , with which they demanded the construction of a new station; the city took over the entire construction costs. The opening took place on September 10, 1964 for passenger traffic. From April 5, 1965 to December 1, 1984 there was also a goods handling facility . As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR East on April 1, 1987 .

Originally, the facility was at ground level, with a riding station across the tracks. In 2003, work began on raising the line to a viaduct. The eastbound tracks used it from July 1, 2007, the westbound from December 6, 2009. In January 2014, the station received an additional exit on the west side.
