history

Construction work on the train station (2008)

Although the section between Shinjuku and Tachikawa had already been opened in 1889 by the private railway company Kōbu Tetsudō , the trains ran without stopping for three and a half decades. That changed on April 4, 1924, when the Ministry of Railways set up a temporary stop for passengers to the Hanami . Due to the growing demand, the stop was expanded to a regular train station, which went into operation on January 15, 1926. The Japanese State Railways opened the Musashi-Koganei depot on September 1, 1959. As part of the privatization of the State Railways, the station became the property of the new company JR East on April 1, 1987 .

Because of the increased traffic density over the years, both by rail and by road, JR East began in 1999 to convert parts of the Chūō main line between Mitaka and Tachikawa without crossing. They built a viaduct and relocated the previously at ground level station in an elevated position. Construction work began on September 28, 2003. Almost four years later, on June 30, 2007, the renovation work on tracks 1 and 2 was completed. This was followed by the renovation of tracks 3 and 4, which lasted until December 6th. Not only the train station itself, but also the surroundings (especially on the south side) have changed a lot. A large forecourt was created by removing buildings that were previously located there; in addition, new residential buildings and shopping centers were built in the immediate vicinity.
