The Sibenik Bridge (officially Croatian Šibenski most ) is an arch bridge made of reinforced concrete on the Croatian river Krka near the town of Sibenik . The bridge crosses the D8 national road and was built between 1964 and 1966. In November 1966 the traffic was opened.

Technical details

construction

The arch of the Šibenik Bridge has a rectangular, three-cell box girder cross - section with dimensions of 7.5 m by 3.7 m at the apex and was the world's first cantilevered reinforced concrete arch bridge with auxiliary bracing. The wall thickness of the upper and lower chords of the box is adapted to the force curve, variable over the arch length and is 28 cm at the top and 60 cm at the support. The overhead deck is 10.8 m wide and was composed of pre-stressed prefabricated beams .

Damage in the war

In 1991 the bridge was hit by several shells during the Croatian War. The most serious hit resulted in damage to a roadway girder, in which large pieces of concrete were blasted out of the footbridge and the lower chord of the girder. However, the load-bearing capacity of the structure was largely retained, so that the bridge could continue to accommodate road traffic.

Corrosion damage

A detailed inspection of the bridge in 2005 revealed that the reinforcing steel had corroded in several places . Particularly affected are the connections between the deck girder and the bridge substructure, which, due to their design, are susceptible to such damage.

Tourism and sport

Bungee jumper on the bridge

The bridge is also a destination for tourists and extreme sports enthusiasts . In the middle there is a platform from which bungee jumping is possible. Immediately south of the bridge is a lookout point with a view of the town of Šibenik and the bridge.
