The Krka rises 3.5 km northeast of the town of Knin at the foot of the Dinaride Mountains at the Topoljski buk waterfall (22 m high) and flows into the sea at Šibenik . The spring river Krčić, which forms the waterfall that plunges into the spring pond, only leads after heavy rainfall and regularly between snowmelt and late summer due to the karst conditions. In the upper 49 km the Krka carries fresh water, in the lower 23.5 km approximately from the waterfalls of Skradinski Buk brackish water . Up to this point it is also navigable from the sea with boats and small ships. A large part of the course of the river is located in the Krka National Park and is therefore protected.
