The Kuray Mountains ( Russian Курайский хребет ) located in the eastern Altai Mountains in the Russian Altai Republic .
The Kurai ridge runs in WNW-OSE direction between the rivers of Bashkaus in the north and Tschuja in the south. It has a length of about 140 km and a maximum height of 3412 m . The Kurai steppe extends on the southern flank and further east the Chuja steppe . The mountains consist of metamorphic rock . There is a continental climate on the southern slopes . Subalpine flora and larch forests thrive on the lower northern slopes . The southern slopes are covered by a steppe landscape.
