description

On the 52.4 cm × 35.8 cm painting, Elector Joachim I of Brandenburg is depicted as a half-length figure against a dark background. He wears a skirt made of dark red damask and white pomegranate pattern , which is lined with fur. Under the skirt he is dressed in an orange-red doublet with rich pearl embroidery in the form of acanthus tendrils and a jagged motif. He is holding a rosary in his hands . There are several rings on his fingers.

The elector's face is heavily modeled. The brightly light parts of the face of the overall dark-looking picture give the regent an expression of willpower. At the same time, he shows an inward-facing posture, as he holds a rosary in his hands as if in prayer. The painting could be the left wing of a diptych or triptych . There is a variant of the picture that is in the Aschaffenburg State Gallery . In this variant, Joachim I is shown in a stately pose with a sweeping feather beret on his head and a signet ring . According to studies, the faces in both paintings are almost identical, so that a direct context is assumed.

The painting was acquired in 1902 by Kaiser Wilhelm II from Frankfurt's private collection for the Hohenzollern Museum. Today it is owned by Georg Friedrich Prince of Prussia as head of the House of Hohenzollern . The owner is the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg .
