history

Above the Wedinghausen monastery in Eichholz there was a Premonstratensian summer house . It was mentioned as early as 1600. A hall was built nearby in the 1870s. The summer house and hall were used for restoration purposes with relatively little success.

The city of Arnsberg and, in particular, Mayor Löcke took up the SGV's plans to build a new building for a restaurant and a hotel there to increase tourism in the city. The city approved 65,000 marks for the construction. She bought the property, the so-called Klosterberg, including the existing buildings, from the Prussian state for 16,000 marks. The summer house was demolished in 1902 and the hall in 1907. The Steinhof City Planning Council provided the plans for a new building. Among other things, he prevailed against designs by Engelbert Seibertz . Construction began in 1903 and was completed in 1904.

It is a three-story, steeply towering solid construction. The style is described using simple (neo) renaissance forms . The tower is particularly striking, giving the whole thing a castle-like impression. In fact, probably for the overall plan of the building, high above the Ruhr hilltop castles have been a model. Many of the original building details are deliberately reminiscent of historical models. Some of them were later replaced by simpler designs.

A city inn, excursion restaurant and hotel were opened in the new building. The business was given to a tenant. The company was successful until the beginning of the First World War . A reserve hospital was set up there during the war. After the war it was used by several families for residential purposes due to the housing shortage. The tower was later used as a youth hostel and then as an emergency shelter for the homeless.

It wasn't until the mid-1920s that it was used again for gastronomic purposes. In 1933 the large open terrace on the east side was roofed over with a view of the city. The plan to make the hotel the center of a planned Kneipp spa in Arnsberg failed due to the city's unwillingness to invest. In 1943 the city sold the hotel to the tenant at the time. The hotel business was interrupted by the Second World War when the building was again used as a military hospital.

After the war, the house developed again into a successful catering business. In 1988 the building was converted into a retirement home. The Marseille-Kliniken AG has taken over the facility, which operated previously under the name of "refuge" in the year of 2002.

Despite all the alterations and additions, the monument value is based in particular on its striking overall impression that shapes the cityscape. As the architect hoped, the building on the steep slope above the Ruhr, together with the nearby Ehmsendenkmal, has become a landmark of the city.
