The Curious Shell Museum Wremen is a museum on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony . The presentation of the exhibits is unusual. They are humorously arranged in diagrams and named according to their appearance, for example as " snow white and rose red ".

position

Wremen is part of the Lower Saxon community of Wurster North Sea Coast . The museum is housed in the old Wremer school building on the village square, the address is Zur alten Schule 4 .

story

In the 1980s, the industrialist Dieter Schröder brought back mussels and sea snails from all over the world , which resulted in a large collection. He began to name his finds with fantasy names. In 2007 the collection moved from its original location in Nordholz to its current location . The facility is supported by the Nordseebad Wremen tourist office for tourism and village development . The museum team works on a voluntary basis.

Together with the Museum for Wadden Fisheries , the Curious Shell Museum forms the “Wremer Museum Island” with reduced admission. In the summer of 2021, the museum appeared in an episode of the NDR broadcast Nordseereport .

Visitor numbers

year Number of visitors
2020 2,831
2019 4,051
2018 3,022
2017 3,240

From the opening in 2007 to 2020, the museum had a total of around 40,000 visitors. In 2020 and 2021 there were pandemic-related access restrictions in the museum. At the same time, many Germans went on vacation in their own country. Thus, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of visitors was better than expected.

In 2021, the museum announced that it would like to keep the extended opening times. It is open from spring to late autumn every year.

Exhibits

The showpieces of the museum are shown in two exhibition rooms. The collection includes over 3,000 or over 4,000 exhibits, depending on the source. The domestic and exotic specimens come from different parts of the world. They show a variety of shapes, colors and patterns.

The biological exhibits are not, as usual, arranged according to scientific aspects, the mussels and snails were given fantasy names that were inspired by their appearance. For example, they are called "Piglet", "Hiroshima", "Pajamas" or "Knubbelfinger". The so titled exhibits are put together to form figures and diagrams and humorously arranged with imaginative puns. In a diagram, for example, the colors of the marine animals are assigned to political parties.

intention

The intention of the exhibition is to encourage a rethinking of nature with a wink. The unusual presentation brings the visitor closer to the diversity of marine animals without teaching.

"Our goal is not to show the biological representation, but rather the diversity of mussels with humor."

- Jan-Hinrik Dircksen, chairman of the Nordseebad Wremen tourist office : Nordsee-Zeitung

The museum conveys knowledge about overfishing , nature and species protection in pictures and text and explains the role of mussels in the food chain . In the case of mussels as food for humans, the spectrum in the world ranges from the status of a delicacy to a vital source of food for the poor.
