The Kurdish language Kurmanji is a recognized minority language in Armenia and is protected there by the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages ​​of the Council of Europe . The language of the Yazidis in Armenia and in Iraq also Jesidisch or Ezdiki or Yezideren called.

history

On January 25, 2002, Armenia ratified the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages ​​and placed Kurdish under state protection. On May 1, 2002 the law came into force. The Republic of Armenia agreed to apply the provisions of the Charter in the fields of education, judicial authorities, administrative authorities and public services, media, and cultural activities and institutions to the Kurdish language.

The speakers of the Kurmanji language in Armenia do not agree on a common name. Either the term “Kurdish” in Latin script or the term “Yezidic” in Cyrillic script is used.

In 1990 the Armenian government allowed the creation of a "Yazidi" alphabet based on Cyrillic letters.

In 2005, the first textbooks on the Kurdish language and literature appeared in Armenia. In 2008, Kurdish textbooks were developed for the fourth and fifth grades and in 2009 for the sixth and seventh grades.

The Yerevan State University offers courses in Kurdish.

Literature and media

In Armenia, the Yazidis have their own radio station that broadcasts in “Yazidi” and their own newspaper called “The Voice of the Yazidis”, which appears in “Yazidi” and Cyrillic.
