Kuroki Tamemoto

Kuroki Tamemoto ( Japanese 黒 木 為 楨 ; * May 3, 1844 , † February 3, 1923 ) was a Japanese general and commander in chief in the Russo-Japanese War .

As the son of a samurai , Kuroki was appointed captain in the new Imperial Japanese Army . Promotions followed quickly, and in February 1875, at the age of 31, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and took over the 12th Hiroshima Infantry Regiment.

Among other things, he served in the first Sino-Japanese War and took part in the Battle of Weihaiwei .

Promoted to general in November 1903, he was appointed commander of the Japanese 1st Army at the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War . He was victorious with this in the Battle of Yalu from April 30 to May 1, 1904. He recorded further successes in the Battle of Liaoyang , in which he withstood Russian counter-attacks on the left flank. He also took part in the battle of the Shaho and of Mukden just as successfully .

Despite his numerous successes, he was one of two senior officers who were passed over when he was appointed General Field Marshal ( gensui ). In 1917 he became a member of the privy council .

On February 3, 1923, he died of pneumonia.
