Kurt Schweinberger (born June 10, 1966 in Hallein , State of Salzburg ) is a former Austrian grass skier . He won the silver medal in giant slalom at the 1991 World Championships and the silver medal in slalom at the 1992 European Championships. In 2002 he became two-time Austrian champion . His sister Sigrid Schweinberger was also a grass skier.
Schweinberger started grass skiing in the 1980s. In 1988 he was accepted into the Austrian national team and was able to celebrate some successes in the youth field. At his first World Cup in 1991 in Bursa , he surprisingly won the silver medal in the giant slalom behind the German Rainer Großmann and he was also among the top five in the Super-G and in the combined. At the European Championships in Faistenau in 1992 , he won another silver medal in slalom behind Marcus Peschek . In the combination he reached fourth place and eighth in the Super-G. He also reached fourth place in the overall European Cup ranking in the 1992 season .
In the next few years Schweinberger could not quite match these achievements, but he managed to continue to rank among the top ten on a regular basis. At the 1993 World Championships he was sixth in slalom, eighth in giant slalom at the 1994 European championships and ninth in slalom and tenth combined at the 1995 World Championships . He stayed just outside the medal ranks as fourth in the Super-G at the European Championships in 1996. Because of his job as a secondary school teacher, he could not spend as much time on the sport afterwards, which was also reflected in the results. In 1998 he temporarily ended his career.
Three years later, the now 35-year-old Schweinberger returned to the competition. At the 2001 World Championships , he finished tenth in slalom and super-G. The next seasons were rather mediocre, his best overall World Cup result was 13th place in 2002. However, in 2002 he was able to look forward to two Austrian championship titles in the super-G and combined. In the summer of 2004 Schweinberger finally retired from top-class sport.
