Marcus Peschek (born May 25, 1967 in Klosterneuburg , Lower Austria ) is a former Austrian grass skier . He became two-time world champion , six -time European champion and 30-time Austrian champion . From 1991 to 1995 he won the overall European Cup five times in a row .

Career

Peschek came to grass skiing as a primary school student. At the age of 12 he became Austrian student champion for the first time and later several junior titles followed. He celebrated his first international successes at the Junior European Championships in 1984 and 1985, where he won a total of four silver and two bronze medals. In 1985 he also took part in a world championship in the general class for the first time, but could not achieve top positions.

Peschek won his first World Championship medal in Nobeyama in 1987 when he finished third in the giant slalom. In the same year he also won his first two Austrian championship titles and by 2010 he had them followed by 28 more titles. In 1988 Peschek won three silver medals in giant slalom, super-G and combined at the European Championships in Gutenstein . He celebrated his first major successes at the 1989 World Cup in Kindberg . In both giant slalom and combined he became world champion and in slalom he finished third. He won two more gold medals at the 1990 European Championships in slalom and Super-G. The Lower Austrian also won two titles at the next two European championships. In 1992 he won gold in the slalom and combined as well as silver in the Super-G in Faistenau and gold in the giant slalom and the Super-G in Kálnica in 1994 . In addition to his successes at the European Championships, Peschek also celebrated numerous victories in the European Cup and he won the overall standings five times in a row from 1991 to 1995. At the world championships in 1991, 1993 and 1995, however, Peschek could not quite repeat his successes from 1989. He came second three times (Combination 1991, Super-G 1993 and 1995) and third twice (Slalom 1991, Giant Slalom 1993).

In 1996 Peschek interrupted his sporting career for three years. He devoted himself to his professional development and in 1997 passed the master's examination as a painter . In the 1999 comeback season, the 32-year-old won his 20th Austrian championship title and at the World Championships in Gaal he came in sixth in slalom and in combination and seventh in Super-G. In 2001 Peschek achieved his first victory in the World Cup , which has been held since 2000 , he finished the season in third place overall. At the 2001 World Championships , he just missed a medal with fourth place in the slalom. Two years later, the now 36-year-old won two medals at the 2003 World Championships in Castione della Presolana : he finished second in both the slalom and giant slalom.

After Peschek had won all competitions at the Austrian championships in 2004, a broken collarbone forced him to take a break for more than a year in July . He was only able to take part in competitions again in August 2005 and only one month later he finished fifth in the giant slalom and eleventh in the Super-G at the World Championships in Dizin .

In 2006 and 2007 Peschek did not take part in any races for professional reasons. He started his own painting business and found little time for sport. In 2008 he returned to competition at the age of 41. Several top 10 results, including two third places in the Super-G and in the giant slalom in Marbachegg , helped him finish ninth in the overall World Cup in the 2008 season. Due to a few failures he was only able to score once in the World Cup in the 2009 season and fell back to 24th place. At the 2009 World Championships in Rettenbach , Peschek was eighth in the giant slalom and ninth in the Super-G. In June 2010, six years after his previous title, he became Austrian Super-G Champion. As in the previous year, he was only able to score in one World Cup race in the 2010 season , in the overall classification he was 32nd. After 2010, Peschek did not take part in any competitions.
