The pearl eyes (Scopelarchidae) are a family of deep-sea fishing from the order of Lizardfish relatives (Aulopiformes). The fish live in all oceans with the exception of the Mediterranean and the Arctic Ocean . Fully grown pearl eyes stay mainly at depths of 500 to 1000 meters, the larvae between 100 and 200 meters. They predatory feed on other meso- and bathypelagic fish, for example bristle- mouthed fish or lantern fish .
features
Pearl eyes are 3.6 to 23 centimeters long, depending on the species. They have large tube eyes that point directly upwards or laterally upwards. The tongue is strong and covered with teeth. Your whole body and the head region behind your eyes is covered in cycloid scales. There are 40 to 65 scales along the lateral line organ . They have 40 to 65 vertebrae . A swim bladder is missing.
