Kurt Steinel

Kurt Steinel (born February 3, 1929 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † September 10, 2005 in Offenbach am Main ) was a German draftsman , graphic artist and illustrator . He was rector of the Offenbach am Main University of Design .

life and work

Steinel grew up in an art-friendly family. His father was the draftsman, lithographer and drawing teacher Julius Steinel (1890–1962). His grandfather was the administrator of the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden . Kurt Steinel studied from 1949 to 1952 at the Freiburg Academy of Fine Arts (today a branch of the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe ). His teachers were above all Rudolf Dischinger (representational drawing), Gottfried Meyer (figurative drawing) and Heinrich Wittmer (representational drawing, color theory, color technology). He then moved to Offenbach and finished his studies at the local art school (the later college for design).

From 1958 Steinel became the head of a class for figure drawing. In 1959 his first book "And God writes straight on a crooked line" was published. In 1971 he became professor for figurative drawing and illustration at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach, from 1974 to 1998 he was, through five re-election, rector of the university. During his term of office, among other things, the new construction of the rooms for the stage and vehicle design and the move to the Isenburg Palace fell .

Steinel also became known through numerous exhibitions, publications, book illustrations and illustrated portfolios with original graphics. In addition, he was a founding member of the International Senefeld Foundation and for many years a juror at the award of the International Senefeld Prize . Steinel died of a heart attack.
