Kurt Wallat

Kurt Wallat (born April 24, 1960 in Lauterecken ) is a German classical archaeologist and editor .

Life

Kurt Wallat studied from 1984 to 1986 at the University of Mainz and from 1986 to 1991 at the University of Freiburg the subjects Classical Archeology , Ancient History and Classical Studies with an emphasis Latin . In 1991 he completed his studies as a Magister Artium with an architectural history study on the Macellum of Pompeii on the east side of the forum . The doctorate with a dissertation on the subject of the imperial buildings on the east side of the forum of Pompeii took place in February 1993 with Volker Michael Strocka .

With his dissertation, Wallat has specialized in the research of unpainted Roman wall structures and established a chronological classification for the brick masonry ( opus testaceum ) in Pompeii, with the help of which the dating of buildings or parts of them is possible even if other dating criteria such as wall painting , Inscriptions or graffiti are no longer there.

From 1993 to 1995 Wallat was an assistant in the research project Houses in Pompeii, funded by the German Research Foundation and based at the University of Freiburg . From 1994 to 1997 he initiated and organized together with Rainer Stutz a documentation and excavation campaign funded by the German Research Foundation in Thugga , Tunisia . From 2003 to 2006, Wallat was together with the Dutch archaeologist Nathalie de Haan head of the documentation and excavation project Terme Centrali in Pompeii, supported by the Dutch Institute in Rome , in which the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei and the Institute for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing of the University of Karlsruhe are also involved were.

He has been working for the Peter Lang publishing house since 1996 , where he is in charge of publications, primarily in the areas of law and economics.
