Kurt Welzl (born November 6, 1954 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian football player .

Career

His traditional position was a center forward, although he was feared primarily as a goal getter and because of his dribbling skills. Kurt Welzl, who scored his first goals in the first division for the Wiener Sport-Club , became known in particular during his time at SSW Innsbruck from 1974 to 1979. In Innsbruck he won a total of two championships and twice the ÖFB Cup . He then moved abroad: At AZ Alkmaar , he suffered a broken leg in a build-up game against Beveren in early August 1979. He became Dutch champions and cup winners in 1981 , only missed the top scorer's crown by two goals and made it to the UEFA Cup final . In the narrow defeat against Ipswich Town (0-3 and 4-2) he scored the first goal in the second leg for Alkmaar. This was followed by two years at FC Valencia , one year at KAA Gent and half a season at Olympiakos Piraeus before he returned to SSW Innsbruck in the winter of 1984/85. Kurt Welzl spent the end of his career in his homeland after SSW Innsbruck, for the successor club FC Swarovski Tirol , the Grazer AK in the Bundesliga and in the 1987/88 season in the 2nd division at SV Spittal / Drau .

During this time Kurt Welzl was called up to the Austrian national team a total of 22 times and scored ten goals. The 4-3 victory over England on June 13, 1979, to which he contributed a brace on his return after a three-year team break , became particularly famous . With Austria he also went to the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 , where he finished eighth with the team.
