Princely state of Kurwai on a map from The Imperial Gazetteer of India (1907–1909) |
Kurwai ( Khurwai , Korwai ) was one of the princely states of the Central India Agency of British India in the Malwa region in what is now the state of Madhya Pradesh . Its capital was the place Kurwai . The principality was founded in 1713 by the Afghan adventurer Muhammad Dilal Khan, who acquired a large territory in the service of the Mughals , but which was largely lost again in the course of the Marathi Wars . The title of the prince was Nawab .
Kurwai was a British protectorate from 1817 to 1947 . In 1901 the country had an area of 368 km² and 14,000 inhabitants. The Nawab joined India on June 15, 1948 and joined the Madhya Bharat Princely Union on June 16 . On November 1, 1956, all princely states of the Union were dissolved and incorporated into the state of Madhya Pradesh .
