In anatomy, square or rounded bones are called short bones (Latin ossa brevia , singular os breve ) .

Short bones largely consist of spongy bone substance ( cancellous bone ), which is only covered by a thin coat of compact bone substance ( substantia compacta ). The compact bone is down to the articular surfaces of the bone skin (periosteum) surrounded. In contrast to long bones , short bones do not have a bone shaft (diaphysis).

The short bones include the carpal and tarsal bones .
