The short- snouted bears (Tremarctinae) are a subfamily of bears . The short-snouted bears used to be widespread across North and northern South America. Today, like the short- faced bear ( Arctodus simus ) and Tremarctos floridanus, they are largely extinct. The short- snouted bears were one of the largest known bear species with the species Arctotherium angustidens , which occurred in Argentina in the middle Pleistocene and whose representatives reached a weight of 1.6 to 1.7 t.
Only one species, the spectacled or Andean bear ( Tremarctos ornatus ), has survived to this day.
