Chester Stock
Chester Stock (born January 28, 1892 in San Francisco , California , † December 7, 1950 ) was an American paleontologist .
Life
Stock was the son of German immigrants (his father came from Bad Orb , his mother from the Bremerhaven area ). His father owned a liquor store but was badly hit by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Stock studied from 1910 at the University of California, Berkeley , first medicine and then paleontology under the influence of John C. Merriam . Like Merriam, he dealt mainly with fossil mammals (in Rancho La Brea and various sites on the Pacific coast and in the Great Basin ). In 1914 he earned his bachelor's degree and in 1917 he received his doctorate on Pleistocene mammal finds in the Hawver Cave. After that he dealt mainly with giant sloths from Rancho La Brea, about which he published in 1925 at the Carnegie Institution, to which Merriam of Berkeley had changed as president and whose Research Associate Stock was from 1926 to 1944. When Merriam became president of the Carnegie Institution in 1921, Stock took over as its assistant initially teaching vertebrate paleontology at Berkeley as an assistant professor. In 1926 he moved to Caltech , where he set up the Faculty of Geosciences with JP Buwalda. In 1947 he took over the chairmanship of the faculty from Buwalda. In addition, since he dealt with the La Brea fossils, he was closely associated with the local museum in Los Angeles, whose senior curator for geosciences he was from 1939 and whose chief curator he was from 1948 to 1950.
In 1939 he was visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles and from 1943 to 1945 at the US Geological Survey in the Los Angeles area and from 1948 researched for the USGS on tertiary fauna in the Mohave Desert.
In addition to California and Nevada, from 1935 he did a lot of field research in Mexico.
In 1945 he was President of the Paleontological Society , 1947 the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology and 1951 President of the Geological Society of America . He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1948, the American Philosophical Society since 1946, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1941 .
