The Kushtaka Lake is a lake in the southeast of the Chugach Mountains in South Central Alaska .
The Kushtaka Lake was created as a glacial edge lake of the Kushtaka Glacier . Its glacier tongue retreated in the past and ends today 1.7 km from the northern lake shore. Kushtaka Lake is 5.3 km long and 2.6 km wide. The lake, located at a height of 28 m , covers an area of 12.6 km². In the west the lake is flanked by the Kushtaka Mountains , in the southeast by the Shockum Mountains . The Cunningham Ridge extends to the northeast . The Stillwater Creek drains the lake at the northeastern shore of the Bering River .
The lake's ice surface occasionally breaks in winter. The cause is obviously the gases rising from the lake floor, which accumulate under the ice. Their pressure increases until the ice gives way and the gas can escape into the atmosphere.
The lake was named in 1903 by GC Martin from the US Geological Survey (USGS) . The Indian name means "demon" or "spirit".
