The Kusterdinger Marienkirche is a late Gothic church in the municipality of Kusterdingen , parish church and sermon place of the Evangelical parish of Kusterdingen in the church district of Tübingen and is one of the culturally most valuable village churches in the Tübingen area . It already existed in the 11th / 12th Century as a small Romanesque parish church . The parish itself can only be verified after 1275. Today's sacristy was probably originally a chapel dedicated to St. Michael of the noble lords of Kusterdingen, to which today's St. Mary's Church was probably added in 1506 or 1507.

The construction

The exterior view shows a simple, rectangular floor plan without a side aisle and choir. The building is completely plastered in white so that the stone can only be seen on the doors and windows. It is light gray sandstone, not a red sandstone like in the Neustadt and Freiburg mines. The windows can be found as classic, late Gothic pointed arches or as small round windows. The south portal, which is also late Gothic, is marked with the year 1507. A sundial with the year 1784 is attached near the portal. After earthquake damage in 1953, the church was renovated by architect Manfred Wizgall according to the design by architect Heinz Klatte and the nave was extended to the north.

Furnishing

The wooden ceiling from 1506 is provided with beam friezes in flat carving (vine as a tree of life, from which vines and grapes, ivy, fantasy leaves and fruits grow; masks and birds). Martin Scheible carved the altar crucifix in 1955, which has been in the sacristy since 2001. The entire glazing (1955, antique glass) by Rudolf Yelin the Elder. J. , who had also designed the altar and pulpit paraments , was replaced by Bernhard Huber in 2001 in a non-representational, restrained color scheme and with a line grid using lead glass technology. The new glazing was carried out by the Stuttgart glass painting company V. Saile. The architect Ludger Schmidt created the altar cross in 2001 in relation to the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 (torn limestone block, held together by an unfinished steel clamp).

The tower

The tower of the Kusterdinger Marienkirche supposedly served as a defense tower of the Kusterdinger Schlossburg before the church was built . It wasn't the first construction. The first two floors are supported by a foundation from Roman times, probably for a former watchtower. Its appearance today goes back to the 16th century. The tower has a square, completely white plastered base and a few small, rectangular windows. A church clock is attached to the side of the tower surface. The eight-faced roof is covered with green roof tiles.

The bells

In the year the sacristy was built (1506/1507) the parish church already had three bells ringing.

The following bells were placed in the tower in the 18th century: The big bell was made in 1724 and was cast by the traveling caster from Hungary, Christian Ginther . Possibly it was a replacement for a bell that was melted down in the Thirty Years War (1618–1648). The middle bell is apparently the oldest. It was cast by the bell founder Hans Eger in Reutlingen in the 15th century. It was taken over by the Michael's Chapel in the course of construction work in 1507. Nothing is known about the age of the little bell. Presumably it was melted down in the Thirty Years War and poured again the following year.

In 1807 the bell cage was torn down and a new one was added. In 1847 the small bell (mentioned above) broke. In both world wars, all bells that had existed until then were removed and replaced in 1950 by bells from the Grüninger bell foundry . The small bell from 1922 was supposed to be included in the new bell, but the sound did not match, so that it was cast in 1955 by Heinrich Kurtz in Stuttgart.

The four bells with the chimes f sharp, a, h, c sharp bear the following inscriptions from the smallest to the largest bell:

  • Baptism bell: I CALLED YOU BY YOUR NAME YOU ARE MY. On the flank: pigeon, cross over water with fish, on the beat: foundry mark and KUSTERDINGEN
  • Youth bell: MR, STAY WITH US. On the beat: GRÜNINGER 1950
  • Fallen bell: OUR FALLEN - PEACE BE WITH YOU !, on the strike: GRÜNINGER 1950.
  • Prayer bell: MR. STAY WITH US !, on the strike: GRÜNINGER 1950.

The bell is said to be one of the most beautiful in the Tübingen district.
