history

grange

To the north of the former industrial park is Hof Overhamm, which was first mentioned in the 12th century. About 105  acres of forest, the Overhammsbusch, belonged to it. The entire estate belonged to the Abteilich-werden Sadelgut Viehausen.

The Overhammshof has been owned by the Grotkamp family since January 1828. The Overhamm farm on Hammer Straße has also been a riding stables since 1980 in the course of suburbanization .

Kutel

From 1967 to 1990 the Kutel dairy was located in the area south of Hammer Strasse. It belonged to the Rhein-Ruhr Milchhof eG Essen.

In the 1960s, when small farms with few animals had livelihood problems, more than 100 farmers from the Ruhr valley got together to build a stable for up to 1000 dairy cows, including a filling system and administration wing, in the open field at Overhammshof. Danish systems were the model. The farmers themselves then wanted to concentrate on growing fodder and raising calves.

There were stables with outdoor facilities, warehouses and the rotary milking parlor where the cows were milked. The name of the company was derived from Ku h- Hotel . Chairman of the board was Wilhelm Mintrop. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated at the end of May 1967. The Kutel was the largest of its kind in Europe. Its construction cost around four million DM .

The Kutel milk bottles made of plastic, with orange, red or green aluminum lids, were available in stores and were also offered as school milk in many schools. The logo consisted of three green cow heads, which is still visible today on the dairy, which was operated by Rhein-Ruhr Milchhof eG Essen in Altenessen .

The products included (normally 0.5 liters, also 1 liter): preferred milk 3.7% fat, gold milk 1.8% fat and cocoa.

The dairy was a popular destination for many years. Groups of visitors and school classes could watch the cows being milked from a gallery. Connected was a fitness trail , a children's playground with pony riding and a restaurant with 220 seats. There was also a factory outlet.

Kutel later belonged to Campina . In 1990 operations on the site were closed.

Refugee home 1990–2004

In 1990 a mass shelter for Roma with 86 residential containers was built on the site . The accommodation far away from any infrastructure, with barbed wire, floodlights and video surveillance, was felt to be inhumane. Of the 900 or so Roma , mostly Yugoslav nationals, who were threatened with deportation, nearly 700 were housed there. On June 23, 2004, Pro Asyl and the Essen Refugee Council presented Mayor Wolfgang Reiniger with a collection of signatures in which citizens demanded that the facility be closed.

After the video system had already been dismantled at the end of 2003, but renovations had started, the refugee camp was closed in mid-2004. In October 2005, the containers of the temporary dormitory were brought to Belgrade .

The former EVAG (since September 2017 Ruhrbahn ) renamed the adjoining bus stop of bus line 180 from Kutel to Overhammshof when the timetable changed in January 2003 .

Further re-uses

Main building of the Kutel site in 2013, now also the seat of a party service, demolished in March 2015

Afterwards, a Werden party service set up shop here, and later a landscaping company and some indoor flea markets were also located there.

Initial reception facility since 2016

BW

Following a resolution by the city of Essen, the buildings on the site were demolished in March 2015. In May of that year, the construction of the initial reception facility at Overhammshof for refugees began on the free area of 40,000 square meters. It is an institution of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The projected cost was 27 million euros.

The decision of the Essen city council was criticized, among others, by the Greens and the left, who criticized the remote location. The left criticized the high number of 800 refugees who made sufficient privacy, hygiene and care standards, child care and social worker support appear questionable.

The facility was moved into in January 2016.
