Kvænangenfjord

Kvænangen or Kvænangenfjord ( North Sami language Návuonna ) is a fjord in the municipalities of Kvænangen and Skjervøy in Troms og Finnmark in Norway . The fjord is 117 km long. It has its mouth between Hylla in the west and Ramnes in the east. It runs mainly in a southerly direction and ends in Kvænangsbotn.

location

The outer part of the fjord is east of the islands of Arnøya and Laukøya in Skjervøy. South of Laukøya is Skjervøya and between this and Store Haukøya further east the large fjord arm Reisafjord branches off to the southwest and extends to Storslett . The island of Spildra is in the middle of the fjord, where it begins to cut into the mainland, but Rødøya is further to the northwest. In the vicinity of these islands, many branches of the fjord branch off to the east. The farthest north is the Olderfjord , followed by the Reinfjord , the Jøkelfjord , which is the longest of these side fjords and almost reaches the Øksfjordjøkelen glacier , and finally the Lille Altafjord ( German  Little Altafjord ) and the Burfjord .

South of Spildra lies the island of Skorpa and on the west side of the fjord between these two islands lies the roadless hamlet of Valanhamn. The island of Nøklan is southeast of Skorpa and the Badderfjord branches off to the east to the south of Nøklan . In the area north of the Badderfjord there are some settlements on the coast of this fjord. But there are many hamlets in this area, of which Undereidet and Sekkemo on Badderfjord are the largest. Sørstraumen is on the west side of the fjord. There the E6 crosses the fjord with the 440-meter-long Sørstraumen bridge . At Sørstraumen, the island of Årøyan is in the middle of the fjord and the hamlet of Kjækan is on the east side. From here the narrow sound of Lillestraumen leads to the innermost part of the fjord, which is called Sørfjord .
