KwieKulik

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

KwieKulik is a Polish artist duo consisting of Zofia Kulik (* 1947 in Wrocław ) and Przemyslaw Kwiek (* 1945). Together they were active from 1971 to 1987 and are considered one of the most important phenomena in Polish post-war art. In addition to working on the sculpture , they mainly devoted themselves to performance and conceptual art and documented them in an extensive archive of photographs and videos.

Career and work

Przemysław Kwiek and Zofia Kulik met at the Academy of Fine Arts Warsaw (Akademia Sztuk Pięknych), where both studied in the late 1960s to early 1970s. As a student of the architect Oskar Hansen at the academy, they were the first artists to transfer his theory of open form into politics, thus combining the artistic with the political. They used the connection between art and politics according to the motto that the private is political extensively to express their criticism of totalitarian Soviet communism and to advocate basic values of democratic socialism such as self-organization and solidarity in public life. Since they were rejected by the Polish government and the neo-avant-garde currents in Poland, they set up their own apartment archive in their apartment with the title Studio of Activities, Documentation and Propagation (PDDiU) . The small apartment was a studio, gallery, archive and living space in one.
