Kychreus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kychreus ( Greek  Κυχρεύς ) was the patron hero of Salamis in Greek mythology , who was previously called Kychreia after him . Pausanias describes him as the son of Poseidon and Salamis , the daughter of Asopus . According to Apollodorus and Diodorus , Kychreus freed Salamis from a devastating serpent; according to other sources, he himself was serpentine and earth-born . Hence he became the first permanent resident and king of Salamis. He married his daughter Glauke to Telamon and made him his successor because he had no sons himself. Plutarch reports of a sanctuary on Salamis, where Kychreus was venerated in serpent form as a patron hero; in Athens he is even said to have been worshiped as a god. In the battle of Salamis , Kychreus is said to have appeared to the Greeks and helped them to victory over the Persians .
