Kyriakos Velopoulos
Kyriakos Velopoulos ( Greek Κυριάκος Βελόπουλος ; born October 24, 1965 in Essen ) is a Greek politician and member of the Greek parliament and chairman of the Elliniki Lysi party, as well as a television personality and author.
Early life and education
Velopoulos was born in West Germany but grew up in Thessaloniki . After graduating from Dendropotamos High School there, he received a scholarship and studied journalism .
During his compulsory military service in the Greek army , he served as an officer on the islands in the northeastern Aegean and on mainland Greece. He is a member of the Academy of the Greek Language in Germany and a member of the Union of Writers of Northern Greece. Until 1988 he was a member of ONNED, the youth organization of the liberal-conservative party Nea Dimokratia (ND).
Professional background
Velopoulos was a member of the Laikos Orthodoxos Synagermos (LAOS), the right-wing populist party of Georgios Karatzaferis , for which he ran in the Greek parliamentary elections in 2004 and won 5700 votes. Since the LAOS received only 2.90% of the vote, Velopoulos could not move into parliament. In the regional elections in 2006 he ran for governor of the Pella prefecture , where he was third with 7.11% and two seats. In the 2007 and 2009 parliamentary elections , he ran in Prefecture B of Thessaloniki and was elected to parliament.
Since 2016 he has been chairman of the political party Elliniki Lysi (Greek: Ελληνική Λύση, in German "Greek solution"), which won ten national parliamentary seats in the July 2019 elections. In the 2019 European elections , his party also won a seat in the European Parliament .
journalism
As a journalist, Velopoulos worked for a number of radio and television stations such as TV Thessaloniki , Ερμης , Best , Top , Opion and TeleAsty , where he presented his two most important shows Η Ηουλη and Ελληνοραμα , in which he promoted his books. Today he is the presenter and owner of Alert TV .
Work as an author
Velopoulos is the author of Greece Bleeds , which is about the corruption of Greek society, the army, the legal system and politics, as well as Alexander, the greatest of the Greeks , an extensive biography of Alexander the great in which he speaks for a Greek Origin of Alexander argues.
Controversy
In 2012 it became known that he had transferred a sum of 400,000 euros abroad.
In 2014, Velopoulos began producing so-called “authentic letters from Jesus Christ ” through his telemarketing show . This sparked widespread criticism from the Greek academic community and mainstream media who denied the historicity of these artifacts and accused Velopoulos of misleading consumers. Velopoulos initially denied having participated in the sale of the letters, but later admitted this and stated that he would continue to sell them. He claimed that his critics lacked the knowledge to dispute the authenticity of the letters.
