The historical countries of today's Czech Republic are:

  • Bohemia
  • Moravia
  • Silesia (1742–1918 Austrian Silesia , after 1918 sometimes called Moravian Silesia ).

In the historical sense, one also speaks of the countries of the Bohemian Crown (also Wenceslas Crown ).

After the collapse of the Great Moravian Empire, Moravia was a subject of dispute between Bohemia , Hungary and Poland . Only in 1021 could it be finally united with Bohemia and in 1182 it was established as a margraviate . It was repeatedly used as a fiefdom for younger princes of the Bohemian royal family. Between 1349 and 1411 a Moravian branch line of the Luxembourgers even formed .

Silesia was originally ruled by the Polish Piast dynasty , which began to split up into smaller and smaller principalities during the 12th and 13th centuries . Between 1327 and 1343 these principalities came under Bohemian sovereignty. It was not until 1372 that the King of Poland renounced his claims to Silesia. Over the next two centuries the Silesian Piast rulers died out one after the other, the last not until 1675. In 1742, most of Silesia was lost to Prussia in the War of the Austrian Succession .

In the 14th century , along with Silesia, the two states of Lusatia came to Bohemia, but were pledged to Saxony during the Thirty Years' War .
