Léon Alpsteg (born September 12, 1928 in Bonneville , † July 21, 2010 ) was a French football player .

Career

The 170 centimeter right winger came to the first division AS Saint-Étienne in 1948 , where his older brother René Alpsteg , who was also a national player, had played since 1944. On August 22, 1948, the then 19-year-old Léon made his debut in an encounter against the Stade Reims in the top French division. This was followed sporadically under coach Ignace Tax , until he was awarded to the second division Olympique Alès in 1949 . At Alès he was a fixture in the team during the 1949/50 season and was able to draw attention to himself as a goal scorer with ten goals. After returning to Saint-Étienne, he was a regular in the first team for some time, but was then increasingly ousted and left the club in 1952.

With SO Montpellier it was another first division team that signed him in 1952. However, Alpsteg hardly played a role in this and was not called up more than five times until he went to the second division club SC Toulon in 1953 . There he succeeded the breakthrough just as little, so he decided in 1954 to move to league rivals RCFC Besançon . At the same time, his brother René came there from Saint-Étienne. At Besançon, Léon established himself as a regular player and played for two years at the side of his brother, who ended his career in 1955. He himself waited another year before leaving professional football behind in 1956 at the age of 27 after 50 first division matches with 17 goals and 119 second division matches with 32 goals. He then wore the jersey of an amateur club from Annemasse from 1956 to 1958 , before playing for the Swiss club Urania Genève Sport between 1958 and 1960 .
